The lush green grass of your lawn needs nutrients to stay healthy. The grass of the lawn extracts the required nutrients from the soil. So, it is important to fertilize the soil periodically to ensure the greenery of the lawn. It is the best way to keep the lawn healthy, lush, and green. And a healthy soil also benefits your trees and landscape.
A fertilizer is a natural or synthetic/chemical-based substance that ensures the fertility of the soil. The fertilizer supplies soil micronutrients and secondary nutrients essential for healthy growth of plants and crops. And on the flipside, unhealthy soil can have a devastating effect on your lawn, your landscape, as well as your shrubs.
Timely fertilization helps the lawn fight off weeds, recover any damages from heavy foot and pest. If you are new to lawn fertilization and have no clue how to do it, the following steps will help you fertilize the lawn like a pro.
Four-Step Guide To Law Fertilization
Step 1: Understand The Grass Type
As the first step to lawn fertilization, you will have to identify the grass type. You need to know whether your grass grows brown in summer or stays green throughout the cool and transitional weather before deciding on the fertilization. The time of fertilization of each grass may vary from its types, for example:
- A cool-season grass requires fertilization in the fall and early spring.
- A warm-season grass requires fertilization before the onset of extreme hot weather.
Step 2: Determine The pH level of the Soil
In the second step you will have to determine the pH level of the soil using a test prob. The pH level of the soil help measure the alkalinity or acidity of the soil which further helps in deciding the type of fertilizers to be used. An extreme acidic soil should be fertilized with low level of nitrogen.
Step 3: Choose The Fertilizer
There are primarily three types of fertilizers
- Nitrogen: Good for leaf growth.
- Potassium (K): Boosts stem growth, water movement in plant, flowering and fruiting.
- Phosphorous (P): Helps in development of roots, flowers, seeds and fruit.
Use a ratio of the three fertilizers to ensure the complete growth and health of the lawn.
Step 4: Fertilize and Water the Soil:
Fertilize the soil by spreading fertilizer evenly on the lawn. Water the soil to ensure soil absorbs the fertilizers.
Regularly fertilize the soil of the lawn for green lush turf that catches everyone’s eyes.
